DENT SURVEY
Latest Footpath Survey

What a day to be in Dent! The sun was shining, many of the fields surrounding the tiny village were full of tents and the village streets were relatively crowded.

However unlike these people, maybe regrettably, we were not there for the Music and Beer Festival. The reason for our visit was to check the state of the paths in the south east of the parish, further away from this hub of activity.

What a delight these field paths turned out to be - meadows full of flowers (as they ought to be?); farm houses well-cared for; and stiles, gates and signposts generally intact and in the right place.

However there were a few places where improvements should be made - some signposts from roads were missing; and could be made - the addition of the little yellow or blue waymarks where the line of the path or bridleway wasn’t obvious. These could prevent walkers going astray and landowners becoming annoyed when walkers invaded their privacy.

All in all both checking groups had an enjoyable, satisfying day, now and then seeing the unexpected, like the tiny brown shrew bustling about a meadow, then rolly-pollying down a steep section when it became aware of our presence.
