FOOTPATH WORK An important part of The Ramblers work is trying to ensure that our local footpath network is kept in a good condition and therefore easy to use. We do this by using the paths and alerting the Authorities responsible for their maintenance to any problems we encounter. Apart from organising group walks which have previously been reconnoitred, we hold monthly Rights of Way surveys where we concentrate on the paths in a specific parish in our area. These surveys again take the form of walks, the difference being that those wishing to take part are organised into smaller groups, each with a competent map reader. Each group attempts to walk a previously unchecked route. This can be fun; it can help those wishing to improve their map reading skills and it can lead to interesting discoveries. There is also a sense of satisfaction knowing that this ‘work’ can help to improve the Rights of Way network as it identifies the problems, with grid references and often photographs, therefore helping the Authorities concerned pinpoint where work needs to be done. The dates of the surveys are listed on the Walks Programme. All the advice given on the ‘About the Walks’ page should be followed eg wear boots, bring food and drink, etc. The meeting place is the same and we leave at 9.30am prompt. However, you could report any problems that make a right of way difficult to use on your own walks. There are official forms available to do this if you wish which can be completed and submitted on line via the Ramblers site. Alternatively you could contact our footpath secretary directly. A report will then be sent to the relevant authority and progress monitored.
